Description
The cloak is not only a garment, but also a metaphor. Already in the Middle Ages we encounter the protective Virgins of Mercy: images of Mary offering protection to people under a wide cloak. Clothing and the protection it provides play a large role also in Alexandra Bircken’s work. The artist refers to our skin as our “interface with the world,” which must be protected accordingly. In this workshop, each family creates its own individual cloak, which is sewn, painted and pasted as desired, in order to find protection under it together in a turbulent time.
