Artist talk

Alexandra Bircken in conversation with Monika Bayer-Wermuth

Key data

Description

“I am concerned with our immediate environment. The architecture in which we move, as well as the fabrics in which we wrap ourselves. Ultimately, it always comes back to the protection and, at the same time, the vulnerability of our bodies. Our skin is also a shell and at the same time the interface between inside and outside. This is where I start.”
Alexandra Bircken

Born in Cologne in 1967 and now living in Berlin, the artist has been Professor of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich since 2018. She is most renowned for her sculptures and installations, for which she draws on an unusually wide range of materials. On the occasion of her exhibition at Museum Brandhorst, curator Dr. Monika Bayer-Wermuth talks to Alexandra Bircken about her artistic practice, about the potential of a sculptural language, and about the themes that occupy her in her work.
