Description

Achim Hochdörfer, Director of Museum Brandhorst, introduces the current new presentation of the collection on the ground floor. It begins with portraits and landscapes by Alex Katz, including iconic paintings such as “The Black Dress” from 1960. Katz, who celebrates his 97th birthday this year, has donated two works to the museum that outline a career now spanning more than 70 years. One is a portrait of the painter and sculptor George Ortman from 1958; the other is a double portrait of his wife Ada and his son Vincent, which was created just last year. Another room has been completely refurnished and focuses on the relationship between works of art and the world around them. What happens when reality enters the picture? Works from the collections by Monika Baer, Seth Price, Wade Guyton and Aaron Gilbert show various possibilities.
