Description

For centuries, flowers have served as a symbol of elementary conditions of human life. In art they unfold a touching sensuality. Around 1620/23, Jan Brueghel the Elder decorated his depiction of the Holy Family with a garland of flowers forming the name of the Mother of God. Religious statement meets fun-loving splendor. Georgia O'Keeffe's floral forms look like female sexual organs and blatantly play with eroticism. Rainer Maria Rilke’s epitaph, quoted by Twombly, expresses the desire to outlast earthly existence in a sensual way. And Jennifer Packer’s brilliantly painted floral still lifes, which she herself describes as “funerary bouquets”, are often created in response to the tragedies of state and institutional violence against Black people in the United States. Between adoration and reflection, a broad panorama unfolds in this guided tour in which we can experience the sensuality of flowers.
