Description

Arthur Simms (*1961 in St. Andrews, Jamaica) lives and works in Staten Island, New York. His sculptures and works on paper usually have their origins in concrete biographical experiences. Since the 1980s, the artist and educator has been working on his extensive oeuvre, which combines post-colonial discourses with fundamental anthropological questions about the significance of knowledge systems and our culturally influenced approach to the world of things. Using natural materials, such as hemp rope and hair, and found objects, Simms creates cocoon-like sculptures that have a totemic character.

Arthur Simms will give a lecture on June 4, 2024 in which he will talk about his work. Among other things, about the works that can be seen in the current collection presentation. The first comprehensive publication honoring the artist's work will also be presented exclusively. It will be published in June 2024 as part of Simm's first retrospective, which is currently on display at the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen.

The lecture and Q&A will be held in English.

Moderation: Arthur Fink, Curator Museum Brandhorst

The exhibition "New Highlights from the Collection", in which two works by Arthur Simms are on display, will be open after the lecture until 9 p.m..
