More about the artwork
After the turn of the millennium, the German artist Alexandra Bircken started engaging with the human body and its relationship to its environment. She works with a wide range of materials and associations, from everyday objects and textiles to organic substances and more conventional media like bronze. “Bronze is a very timeless and classical material in sculpture, which is why I find it very suitable for casting less classical objects like a worn pair of sports gloves,” Bircken explains.
"Warrior” is a bronze cast of hockey gloves. The titular inscription was already present on the original gloves, which are part of the protective equipment for this contact sport. Through the bronze casting process, the protective gloves are transformed into a material that has been used in art since antiquity and is also traditionally associated with weapons and armor.
