More about the artwork

The renowned American choreographer and dancer Paul Taylor (1930–2018) stands before us with a challenging composure in a powerful frontal view. He is wearing a simple white top and white leggings. A wide monochrome gray surface frames the flat figure, reminiscent of an archaic Greek Koros. Its tense power suggests that the figure could leap out of the picture at any moment, without warning. Painted in a clear, direct manner with a limited color palette, Taylor is both an athlete and an abstract figure. From the head and eyes with their nimble agility to the powerful feet, we are mesmerized by this figure, its monumentality and posture, and the promise that Taylor will begin to dance.
