Description
Cy Twombly’s late rose paintings incorporate verses by renowned poets. Each four-panel work combines images of roses with a carefully selected poem, including translations of works by Ingeborg Bachmann and Rainer Maria Rilke. The artist occasionally changed the poems he referenced, making small but significant adjustment. In on of Rilke’s poems, for example, the final word “(eye)lid” was replaced by “petal”.
