Description

Alexandra Bircken plays provocatively with binary gender identities in her sculptures and objects. Through her choice of materials, she triggers humorous and exaggerated associations with self-image, labeling processes and the desires of the sexes. Bircken gives men’s names to limply hanging gear sticks, and with the placenta preserved in Kaiserling fixative, “Origin of the World” (2017), she responds to Gustave Courbet’s famous painting and thus states that the origin of the world is far more complex than the male gaze between a woman’s legs would suggest. Initially humorous clichés are contrasted with the expectations, constraints and dangers that come with them.
