The class “Künstlerisches Schreiben und Forschen” warmly invites you to the closing reading of their project “Everything is Free,” which transformed the former bookshop at Museum Brandhorst into a space for writing, research, and open exchange.
“Everything is free now,” Gillian Welch sings, and she does not mean it in a positive way. Her music is available for free everywhere, and she wonders how she is supposed to make a living from it. Text in art has not only become cheap since the rise of AI. Some galleries now rely entirely on AI-generated interpretive texts, presumably in the hope that nobody reads them anyway. The notion of “free labor” (Terranova) in digital contexts is perhaps nowhere more evident than in the freely available texts the internet provides. How do we deal with this? Flooding the zone with poetry, like Kevin Killian, who sometimes writes beautiful reviews in Amazon comments? Using Google Maps as a publishing platform? Or simply thinking for ourselves, which costs nothing?
