Description
The event will take place at Museum Fünf Kontinente.
The entangled histories between what is today Türkiye and Germany reach far back—across many generations and borders. Over centuries, historical relations, mutual influence, and appropriation have become inscribed in artworks, collections, and architecture, and they continue to shape how museums present and narrate today. How can these shared histories be made visible within cultural institutions? And how might they create space for lived experience, artistic practices, and forms of knowledge that have so far been insufficiently reflected in established narratives? Specialists from museums, academia, and the arts come together in conversation and invite the audience to join them in thinking about these issues.
The panel brings together Dr. Gürsoy Doğtaş (art historian and curator, Munich), Prof. Dr. Wendy Shaw (independent researcher, Berlin), Ulya Soley (SAHA Curator, Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, Berlin), and Dr. Gülşah Stapel (co-founder and co-director, TAM Museum, Berlin). The evening event will be moderated by Ümit Mesci (curator, Istanbul Modern) and Dr. Anahita Mittertrainer (curator, Department of South West Asia and North Africa, Museum Fünf Kontinente, Munich).
The event at the Museum Fünf Kontinente is the public part of the workshop “Entangled Histories Revisited. Museums in Dialog,” a collaboration between Istanbul Modern, Münchner Stadtmuseum, Museum Brandhorst, Museum Fünf Kontinente, and Modern Art Collection in the Pinakothek der Moderne supported by the Agency for International Museum Cooperation with funding from the German Federal Foreign Office.
