Description

COLLAGE WORKSHOP: PORTRAITS BY ANDY WARHOL

Andy Warhol is world famous. Even if you don’t know his name, you’ve probably seen one of his paintings. He turned everyday objects like a tin can or a flower into art, and often into reproduced superstar artworks. By using bright colors and reducing images to their essentials, he managed to bind zeitgeist and coolness in his works. That is also the case with the portraits he made of a wide variety of people. It was an honor to be portrayed by Warhol, because that could make you “immortal.” To this day, the prints of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley or Liz Taylor are stored in our collective memory.

Based on the series of works “Ladies and Gentlemen” (1975), which can be seen in the exhibition “From Andy Warhol to Kara Walker. Scenes from the Brandhorst Collection,” we will use collages in the Factory in an attempt to get a better idea of self-depictions and portraits. In the process, the facial representations can be altered by means of multi-layered arrangements of colored paper and foils as well as the use of bright colors. How different can the effect of one and the same motif be, modified simply by lighter or stronger printing, by dark shadows and gaudy colors, by different levels and materials, by smudging or hard lines? Which combination creates the most striking effect for you? How can we find an interesting motif? Following in Warhol’s footsteps, you can creatively explore his artistic practice.

The workshop will be run by art historian and educator Esther Emmerich.
