Description

Reading from John Cage's Letters

“I no longer write scores,” John Cage wrote in 1959 to critic Peter Yates, “but only pieces that can be performed in any order. I intend to transfer this method to the theater as well. Naturally, every performance is unique, although no part is improvised. Each person simply does what they have to do and connects with everyone else, without anyone planning or controlling it.”

Director FX Mayr and Residenztheater actors embrace this principle of chance, using it as a guide through John Cage’s extensive correspondence. Excerpts from letters, including the recently published love letters to his partner Merce Cunningham, personal anecdotes and observations, as well as reflections on his artistic work, come together with theatrical and musical elements, shedding new light on different aspects of his life and work in each performance.
