New York in the 1980s: here, party and protest, fame and persecution, life and failure existed side by side. A real melting pot! Famous nightclubs like Paradise Garage and Club 57 were places of experimentation and community, exchange and collaboration. Andy Warhol’s studio, the Factory, was also a place of cooperation and celebration that attracted a wide variety of artists and creatives. Graffiti spread throughout the public space. Artists used this street painting to take a stand on pressing social issues such as AIDS, discrimination and gentrification. Haring was also inspired by this and created thousands of subway drawings. Haring and Warhol both designed posters that were distributed at protests, election campaigns and in public places. Their works bear witness to a lively party culture, but also to the vibrant New York art scene that shaped and occupied social spaces. In this guided tour, we let the works take us into the themes and scenes of the time.
