Description

SCREEN PRINTING WORKSHOP: FOREVER WARHOL – WARHOL FOREVER

Andy Warhol is world famous. Even if you don’t know his name, you’ve probably seen one of his paintings. He turned everyday objects like a tin can or a flower into art, and often into reproduced superstar artworks. By using bright colors and reducing images to their essentials, he managed to bind zeitgeist and coolness in his works. That is also the case with the portraits he made of a wide variety of people. It was an honor to be portrayed by Warhol, because that could make you “immortal.” To this day, the prints of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley or Liz Taylor are stored in our collective memory.

In this workshop you will get to know the technique of screen printing yourself. At various stations we will introduce you to it and explore questions such as: How different can the effect of one and the same motif be, modified simply by lighter or stronger printing, by dark shadows and gaudy colors, or by different print layers? Which combination creates the most striking effect for you? How often must a motif be repeated in order to become an immortal image? How do you capture a certain zeitgeist in such a reduced representation? Following in Warhol’s footsteps, you can creatively explore his artistic practice.

The workshop will be run by artist Matt Wiegele. Born in Munich, he explored the city and its subculture with his skateboard. He played in various bands, graduated from college, worked in advertising for a few years and was a founding member and creative head of unitedskateboardartists. Since then he has been involved with independent art and cultural projects and was instrumental in the award-winning, EU-funded project “What’s The Deal?” He currently works with screen printing, objects and spaces.
