Description

How do we deal with our immediate surroundings? Do we protect ourselves or submit to it without resistance? Are we vulnerable or armed and unassailable? And how does our body constitute itself in a technoid age in which it itself seems to be an archaic remnant? These highly topical questions play a key role in the work of Alexandra Bircken, who was born in Cologne in 1967.

The Berlin-based artist has been a professor of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich since 2018 and is known for her sculptures and installations, for which she draws on an unusual range of materials: from everyday objects such as packaging for hair coloring, rocking horses, and sawn-up motorcycles to textiles in handmade and machine-processed form to organic materials, such as wood, leather, bones, or even a placenta – anything that surrounds us can become a sculptural medium.
