Description

Classical Modernism is visible and palpable in Louis Fratino’s paintings. He depicts everyday moments of closeness, colored by queer life, male care, and tender intimacy. In doing so, he expands conventional modes of representation to include a perspective that has long been excluded from art historical narratives. Connection, familiarity, and care are also evident in LaToya Ruby Frazier’s work. The seemingly documentary, finely composed photographs tell of precarious social and physical conditions resulting from massive environmental pollution caused by the U.S. Steel corporation in Braddock, Pennsylvania, the artist’s hometown, but also of community cohesion and the close familial bonds between the female members of her family.
