Description
Five Friends | Postwar. Between new beginnings and repression
Our guided tour sheds light on the social context of the post-war period in which Cage, Cunningham, Johns, Rauschenberg and Twombly worked together on interdisciplinary artistic approaches. The Cold War, the McCarthy-era repression of queer people and dissenters, as well as the belief in progress, for example in space travel and media technology, are reflected in many of the five artists’ works. So-called codes are used to create spaces of freedom and build and expand networks in defiance of social norms and repression.
