Five Friends | Inside Outside USA
Among the key experiences reflected in the artistic works are the journeys that took Rauschenberg and Twombly to Europe and North Africa in the 1950s, for example, and later Cage to Japan. The proverbial expansion of the (American) horizon is expressed in sculptures, work titles and photographs. These works fostered a departure from academic tradition and offered surprising solutions in terms of form and content, in which a supposed “high culture” met pop culture.
