Description
October 7, 2021, marks the 450th anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto. The victory of the so-called “Holy Alliance” has since been mythically exaggerated by different parties in Europe as an imaginative and propagandistic event. Thus, many of the references to the Battle of Lepanto are in the service of ideological division: between West and East, Christianity and Islam, reason and fanaticism. Cy Twombly’s Lepanto cycle can be read as a large-scale critique of this divisive history. He had in mind the – often warlike – confrontations and related cultural exchanges between the three continents of the ancient world: North Africa, Asia, and Europe.
