Description

Alex Katz, born in 1927, once described his art as “painting in the present tense.” His motifs take us into an urban world, which finds its expression especially in portraits of colleagues and family and mostly urban landscape motifs. Thanks to Anette and Udo Brandhorst’s close relationship with the American artist, the collection includes some of his most major work, such as “The Black Dress” (1960), the iconic six-fold depiction of his wife Ada.

The recent donation of two works, which span almost his entire career as an artist, further expands the already considerable portfolio. In 1958, Katz portrayed the painter and sculptor George Ortman. In 2023, he created a double portrait of Ada and her son Vincent. In our overview tour, we take a look at these new portraits in the collection as well as the monumental landscapes – nocturnal scenes with an almost abstract appearance – and make the connection between the late 1950s and the present day.
