Artworks attract us in many different ways. They agitate us or give us pause for thought, and sometimes their humor makes us laugh. Some artworks have such a strong effect that we can remember our encounter with them many years later. Each month, a different curator chooses a work from our online collection and, in a digital dialog, shares with us not only art historical facts and background knowledge, but also their personal experiences and thoughts.
Use the opportunity to ask questions and to chat with us about art – perhaps while enjoying a cup of tea or an after-work drink.
The lockdown has forced many of us to rely on ourselves. For many, the consequences of working from home and the disruption to our previous way of life have led to drastic changes in our everyday lives, even to the point of social isolation. As a result, quite a few people are fundamentally reflecting on their previous habits and attitudes.
We will examine Monika Baer’s “In Pieces” (2013–2015) in the light of this new lived reality in order to find out how we see the work today in relation to the experiences of the past year, and whether Monika Baer’s profound engagement with painting can perhaps also be viewed differently in this context. Contemporary art becomes particularly exciting when it does not manifest itself one-sidedly, but can be experienced anew again and again.
