For the first time, Arthur Jafa’s epic film “akingdoncomethas” (2018) will be presented in Europe. In it, the artist and filmmaker weaves together found internet clips of sermons, gospel choirs, and prayer gatherings into a dense collage. The work powerfully foregrounds Black communal and spiritual practice in the United States and has been a part of the Brandhorst Collection since 2019. For Museum Brandhorst and MUNICH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, Arthur Jafa has also curated the film program “A Peculiar Vantage: A Selection of Black Cinema,” which is being presented in cinemas across Munich.

Filmmaker, cinematographer, visual artist: Arthur Jafa is considered one of one of the most important artists of our time. As part of the anniversary exhibition “Forever Young – 10 Years Museum Brandhorst,” the museum is offering visitors broad and direct access to his work. In addition to selected photographic works, his epic film “akingdoncomethas” (2018) from the Brandhorst collection is being presented in Europe for the first time.
In parallel, MUNICH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (June 27 to July 6, 2019) and Museum Brandhorst will jointly present the film program “A Peculiar Vantage: A Selection of Black Cinema“ curated by Jafa and representing various positions in Black Cinema. These works are not only central to the artist and his oeuvre, but also open up a view of on Black film productions beyond the mainstream.
On the occasion of the film program, a panel discussion with Arthur Jafa and his guests will take place on July 1, 2019, in the museum foyer. Participants include Larry Clark, one of the central protagonists of the L.A. Rebellion movement; filmmaker Dennis Dortch, co-founder of BLACK&SEXY TV; and director and film critic Christopher Jon Alexander. The conversation will be moderated (in English) by filmmaker Megan Fraser.
