Baselitz was born Hans-Georg Kern in 1938 in Deutschbaselitz, Germany. He grew up during a period of upheaval shaped by war and reconstruction. Early on, he developed an independent artistic stance. Because his work did not conform to the expectations of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), he was expelled from the College of Fine and Applied Arts in Berlin-Weißensee and continued his studies in West Berlin. Experiences of disruption, change, and questions of origin have informed his work ever since.
The painting “Manopola – Fausthandschuh” (“Manopola – glove”, 2019) belongs to his late work. The forms often appear reduced, at times fragmentary—as if still in the process of coming into being. At the same time, the physical dimension of painting remains unmistakable. Gestural application, raw material, and the visible trace of the hand assert themselves against any tendency toward dissolution. In the gold-ground passages in particular, the work develops a distinctive ambivalence: between elevation and vulnerability, between iconic charge and bodily immediacy.
