Andy Warhol's "Diamond Dust Shadow” is part of a series in which he explored the depletion of images and the withdrawal of meaning through seriality and repetition. Although the work appears abstract, it is based on a figurative source. One of Warhol's studio assistants took photographs of shadows cast by unidentified objects, which then served as the basis for the silkscreens. With each stage of production, the distance between the real object and its pictorial representation increased. Known as a passionate collector, Warhol had a particular fascination with jewelry, diamonds, and gemstones. He not only exchanged these precious ornaments for his own artworks but also incorporated them into his art. The “diamond dust” used here is, in fact, finely ground glass; its shimmering effect accentuates the material surface of the image.
