More about the artwork

What at first glance looks like a series of snapshots of Andy Warhol and his eccentric entourage is the result of several extensive photo sessions that took place in 1969 and 1970, during the course of which the photographs’ visual composition slowly emerged. Social and political concerns shaped Avedon’s portrait photography at the time. He wanted to capture the momentous movements that “simultaneously fractured and united the country.” His legendary depictions of fashion icons and art stars were accompanied by portraits of political actors and representatives of American counterculture. These photographs were therefore concerned with more than just the glamour Warhol and his contemporaries exuded. For Avedon, they epitomized the sexual revolution that took place in the United States during those years. After all, Warhol’s 1966 film “Chelsea Girls” had caused a scandal with its queer protagonists, permissive sex scenes, and drug consumption in front of the camera.
