Museum Brandhorst

Rehang in progress from 17–30 May 2016

for the exhibitions Cy Twombly: In The Studio and Schiff Ahoy: Contemporary Art from the Brandhorst Collection

Cy Twombly is back. In addition to paintings, the new display on the upper floor of the Museum Brandhorst also comprises drawings, sculptures and photographs by the artist. As such, the display spans a full arc across all the media and creative periods of one of the most significant artists of post-war art. The exhibition Schiff Ahoy: Contemporary Art from the Brandhorst Collection sheds light on how the art of the 1960s and 1970s essentially came to invent contemporary art as we know it. Artists placed the static and hermetic character of works of modern art in question, actively addressed the role of the viewer and engaged with alternative artistic formats and distribution channels. These questions are still crucial today and reveal numerous surprising connections between the works of the Brandhorst Collection.

The entire Museum Brandhorst is presenting itself and its collection in a new light.

Until Pfingstmontag (Whit Monday), 16 May 2016, the exhibition Painting 2.0: Expression in the Information Age can still be seen in some areas of the museum. Due to the renovation work necessary for the subsequent reopening, there will be a temporary closure of the exhibition spaces. Between Tuesday 17 and Monday 30 May 2016, all exhibition spaces will remain closed.

During this period, the HORST Esskultur-Bar will remain open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. except for Monday and the public holiday marking Fronleichnam/Corpus Christi, 26 May. The bookshop will be open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during the closure, except for Monday and Corpus Christi, 26 May.

From Tuesday 31 May 2016, we invite you to visit the upper floor of the Museum Brandhorst during our regular opening hours to see the exhibition Cy Twombly: In The Studio. From Thursday 9 June 2016, with the exhibition Schiff Ahoy: Contemporary Art from the Brandhorst Collection, the whole museum will once again be open to the public.
