FRANZ WESTFranz West

Franz West, born in 1947 in Vienna, is one of the most important living Austrian artists. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. West’s largely three-dimensional works fuse echoes of Wiener Aktionismus (Actionism) and Pop Art, from shapes developed from the human body with philosophical contexts. Interaction plays an important role in West’s art, both between himself and other artists and also between his work and the viewer. As a consequence, his work often takes up the whole space available. The artist was represented at documenta in 1992 and 1997. In 1990 he participated in the 44th Venice Biennale. He lives and works in Vienna.

In 2007, the seven-part work "The Fragile at its Cloaca" (2007), created for the Venice Biennale, was acquired and now forms the core of Franz West’s work complex in the Brandhorst Collection. In addition, the collection boasts two exceptional works from the Paßstücke (Adaptives) group, as well as several sculptures from the late 1980s.
