ANDY WARHOL
Born in Pittsburgh in 1928, Pennsylvania, the son of Slovak immigrants, Warhol studied art and design in his native city. Having moved to New York in 1949 and after quickly making a name for himself in the retail and fashion industries as a product designer and graphic artist in advertising, he experienced his initial success as a visual artist in the early 1960s. He had his breakthrough with works that were inspired by everyday life. Today, Warhol is considered one of the protagonists of Pop Art. From the very outset, the artist presented himself as a glamorous eccentric and that earned him a large crowd of supporters, whom he proceeded to involve in the production of his works. Warhol died unexpectedly in New York in 1987 after an operation.
With considerably more than 100 works, the Brandhorst Collection constitutes one of the largest Warhol collections in Europe. Particularly noteworthy is that all creative phases, including the very early years, are represented by high-quality works. The museum owns early drawings in the blotted-line style he devised, hand-painted dollar bill paintings from the 1950s and famous silkscreen prints of stars or flowers. In addition, the Brandhorst Collection includes groups of works from the 1970s and ’80s, in which Warhol focused, on the one hand, on the culture of glamour and, on the other, on metaphysical subjects. Thanks to the Brandhorst Foundation, the Brandhorst Museum will be able to continue acquiring works to supplement its unique Warhol collection.
